Las Vegas police discover suspect in two California slayings

     Review-Journal

A man sought in connection with two Los Angeles slayings was arrested Tuesday in Las Vegas after a police sergeant stumbled across the suspect's car in a hotel parking lot.
Las Vegas police Sgt. Al Cervantes said Roberto Franklin Ramirez, 20, of Los Angeles was taken into custody 11 a.m. at the Thunderbird Hotel, 1213 Las Vegas Blvd. South.
Ramirez's girlfriend, Nikki Shamdasani, who is a dancer at Little Darlings strip bar, was taken into custody for questioning.
A Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman said Ramirez was being sought in the June 6 slaying of 20-year-old Teresa Del Rio of Los Angeles. Del Rio was a passenger in a car full of people when a man fired several shots at the vehicle.
Ramirez also was wanted on a murder warrant in the Feb. 14, 1998, killing of Jose Guerra in Hollywood, Calif. The spokeswoman said Guerra was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Los Angeles detectives think both shootings are gang-related.
Cervantes said Los Angeles police notified him Thursday they had information that Ramirez was in Las Vegas with his girlfriend. Cervantes said he started checking the parking lots of the 30 most popular nongaming hotels in town for Ramirez's car.
"This morning, I was driving through the parking lot of the 29th hotel on my list, and there it was," he said.
Police called Ramirez's room and told him to come out, and he did, Cervantes said.
Los Angeles detectives were on their way Tuesday to Las Vegas to question the suspect.
Cervantes leads the Criminal Apprehension Team, a group of officers and detectives who search for suspects wanted in violent crimes. The team consists of officers from Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas, and agents from the FBI.
