Man gets life sentences in killing
Review-Journal A defendant who pleaded guilty to murder in the June 1998 slaying of an elderly man was sentenced to consecutive life terms in prison Thursday. Esteban "Steve" Hernandez, 20, escaped a possible death sentence when he agreed to plead guilty to murder with use of a deadly weapon on July 8. His capital murder trial had been scheduled to begin the following week.
Hernandez was charged in the June 23, 1998, slaying of Samuel Paterniti, 64, who was abducted from a store parking lot at Lake Mead and Decatur boulevards. His body was found under a pile of rocks in the desert north of Centennial Parkway four days later. He had been stabbed repeatedly in the face and neck. District Judge Joseph Bonaventure on Thursday sentenced Hernandez to two mandatory consecutive life sentences. Each sentence permits parole eligibility after 20 years.
