Worker dies in cave-in at Henderson project
Review-Journal Tragedy struck a city of Henderson construction project Thursday when the walls of a trench collapsed around a man and his son, and the son was killed. Vicki Taylor, assistant to the city manager, said the 10:30 a.m. accident occurred at 200 Athens Road, near Boulder Highway and East Sunset Road, where the city is expanding its Water Reclamation Facility. The father and son worked for Expert Excavating Inc. and were on the last day of this job, Taylor said.
"We've never had anything like this happen before on a city project," she said. Taylor said that when Henderson and Clark County fire departments arrived at the scene, the father was buried up to his waist and was easily rescued. His son was completely buried, she said, and rescuers had a hard time getting to him because the sides of the trench were unstable and kept collapsing. The body was recovered in the late afternoon. Officials declined to identify the victims pending notification of relatives. Taylor said investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were looking into the accident.
