Nevada briefs
Commissioners to discuss issues Clark County Commissioners Erin Kenny and Lance Malone will talk and take questions from reporters on Friday's "Nevada Week in Review," which airs at 7:30 p.m. because of KLVX-TV, Channel 10's pledge drive. The issues planned for discussion include ethics, neighborhood casinos, and Wal-Mart's efforts to expand in Southern Nevada in the face of union opposition. Appearing with the two county commissioners will be host Mitch Fox, political commentator Jon Ralston and KLAS-TV, Channel 8 reporter Tom Jones. The program returns to its regular 8 p.m. time slot next week. Highway Patrol targets road rage RENO -- The Nevada Highway Patrol went out in search of road rage and apparently found quite a bit. In eight hours on Tuesday, officers issued 44 citations for hazardous maneuvers and speeding. They also wrote people up for suspended drivers' licenses and registrations. The Aggressive Driving Apprehension Program Team also helped in four arrests -- two on felony charges, one drunken driving and two warrants. The program was launched Sept. 8 with an unmarked white 1993 Chevrolet Caprice patrolling the freeways. It concentrated on the Interstate 80-U.S. Highway 395 interchange and traveled most during morning and evening rush hours. The trooper in the patrol car alerted troopers ahead about unsafe drivers and they collared the suspect vehicles. The aim is not so much to write tickets as to educate motorists about the hazards of aggressive driving, according to trooper Tony Almaraz. "Hopefully, in time, when people are more educated, it will be more a deterrent," Almaraz said. "They'll know the patrol is watching."
New city manager named for Sparks SPARKS -- Mayor Tony Armstrong is wasting no time in naming a new city manager -- even if it is on an interim basis. Armstrong will nominate Shaun Casey, 41, to take over the city's top job. Casey has been assistant city manager since May. He will move up Oct. 4 when Terry Reynolds leaves the job. Casey will get a six-month tryout in the job, with reviews from the City Council every two months. After six months, the council can keep him or search for a new city manager. Until May, Carey had spent more than six years as Sparks public works director. His goals include forming a team to advance downtown redevelopment and to prepare the city to act on its new redevelopment areas around the Sparks Marina Park, the Oddie Boulevard corridor and the Conductor Heights area. Deal OK'd for fire fighting tanker base BATTLE MOUNTAIN -- Lander County Commissioners have approved a 20-year agreement with the Bureau of Land Management for the fire fighting tanker base at the Battle Mountain Airport. The contract calls for the BLM to pay $8,500 a year. In the past, the BLM hadn't been charged for its use of the airport, but it will be increasing its acreage from 1.7 acres to 11.7 acres. The lease amount is pegged to increase to $11,350 per year by the 20th year, to account for inflation. Landing fees also will increase from $50 to $90. BLM plans call for building more taxiways to accommodate fire retardant tanker planes that use the airport during the summer. An evaporation pond will also be constructed, which is recommended by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to prevent fuel from leaking into a nearby gravel pit.
