Wildcats claw their way back to top Chaparral in volleyball
Review-Journal Las Vegas' girls volleyball team was one point away from losing in the fourth game Thursday night at Chaparral, but the Wildcats rallied from a 14-9 deficit to win 16-14 and force a fifth and deciding game. And Las Vegas took advantage, earning a 15-11, 1-15, 6-15, 16-14, 15-10 victory. "It was one of those games as a coach that you just kind of dream about, especially with young players," Las Vegas coach Geno Frugoli said. Adrianne Page led the way with 21 kills and four aces for the Wildcats, and Keli Bradshaw added 15 kills. Katie Nihipali led Chaparral with 15 kills. At Durango, Ginny Kirkendall had 10 kills and six digs to lead the Trailblazers to a 15-5, 15-6, 14-16, 15-5 victory over Centennial. Carleen Waldron added nine kills, and Danielle Boyack had 44 assists for Durango. At Green Valley, Erika Twesme had 10 kills and five aces to lead the Gators to a 15-6, 15-4, 15-9 victory over Valley. Aubre Anderson added five kills and seven blocks, and Jessica Lackey had 12 assists for the Gators. At Silverado, Lacee Koelliker and Nikki Ganier both had nine service points to lead the Skyhawks to a 15-2, 15-5, 15-3 victory over Desert Pines. At Western, Emily DeLong had 11 kills and five aces as Cheyenne defeated the Warriors 15-7, 15-7, 15-6. Tammy Cribbs added 28 assists for the Desert Shields. Shanna Herron had 12 kills and seven blocks for Western. At Foothill, Hillary Blackburn had nine aces as Rancho defeated the Jaguars 4-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-5. Nina Allamani added three blocks and three kills for the Rams. At Vo-Tech, Eldorado topped the Roadrunners 7-15, 15-10, 15-6, 10-15, 15-11. Vo-Tech's Afton Pratt had 13 kills and 10 blocks in the loss. At Bishop Gorman, Tarin Keith had 16 kills, five aces and six blocks as the Gaels defeated Cimarron-Memorial 15-0, 15-6, 14-16, 15-0. Lacie Jackson added 23 assists and 13 service points, and Jamie VanMeetren had 10 kills for the Gaels. At Basic, Boulder City defeated the Wolves 2-15, 15-6, 15-12, 12-15, 15-11 despite 21 kills from Basic's Danielle Dodgen. Jen Nelson added 37 assists for Basic. At Clark, Palo Verde swept the Chargers 15-2, 15-13, 15-13. -- SOCCER -- Dale Adams had six goals as Durango blanked host Cheyenne 10-0. The Trailblazer defense didn't allow a shot on goal in the game. Shane Bangle added two goals, and Fred Aboul-Hasn and Drew Sutton had one each for the Trailblazers. At Eldorado, goalkeeper Rocky VanBlaricom had a shutout as the Sundevils defeated defending zone champion Silverado 2-0. Gerardo Coravalan and Juan Pantaleon each had a goal for Eldorado.
At Cimarron-Memorial, freshman Daniel Pearce had two goals and two assists to lead the Spartans to a 5-0 victory over Western. Brooklynn Huntsman added a goal and an assist, and Travis Wagley and Dustin Davidson had a goal each for Cimarron. Goalkeeper Nick Miller got the shutout. At Las Vegas, the Wildcats and Vo-Tech played to a 0-0 tie. Las Vegas' Daniel Valdez and Vo-Tech's Miguel Lopez both saved 12 shots to earn shutouts. At Desert Pines, Tyson Miller and Stephen Keefe had two goals each as Green Valley defeated the Jaguars 7-1. Justin Blackburn, Greg Allen and Josh Terry each had goals for the Gators. At Palo Verde, the Panthers and Bonanza played to a scoreless draw. Palo Verde's Bryson Wright and Bonanza's Mark Stodder got the shutouts. At Centennial, goalie Ramon Lopez had 14 saves and the shutout as Clark stopped the Bulldogs 3-0. Daniel Alvarenga and Brian Flores each had a goal for the Chargers. The third goal was scored when Centennial put the ball into its own net. At Valley, Fernando Flores scored two goals as the Vikings defeated Foothill 5-0. Emanual Gebremeskal, Alvaro Moreno and Hugo Olguin each added one goal in the victory. At Rancho, Brady Okuda shut out the Rams to give Chaparral a 2-0 victory. Omar Bywaters and Mo Chavarria each scored a goal for the Cowboys. At Mojave, Jared Starbird had two goals to lead Bishop Gorman to a 6-1 victory over the Rattlers. Boomer Arbelaez, Joseph Zaher, Ryan Cuen and Sam Mirkovich added goals for the Gaels. At Basic, Pat Gill scored midway through the second half to give the Wolves a 1-0 victory over Boulder City. Bobby Hoffman recorded the shutout for Basic. -- GIRLS GOLF -- Erin Elliott shot a 61 to lead Las Vegas to a 326-338 victory over Valley at Las Vegas Country Club. Lakeshia Stanton shot 61 for Valley. At Revere, Sarah Azlyn shot a 44 to lead Silverado to a 252-375 victory over Foothill. At Paiute, Ellie Priestman carded a 50 to lead Centennial to a 285-306 victory over Cheyenne. At Angel Park, Durango shot a 211 on its way to a victory over Mojave (303) and Clark (329). Erin Andrews paced Durango with a par 35. Sabrina Faber added a 36 and Whitney Welch a 39 for the Trailblazers. At Angel Park, Western edged Clark 320-329. Clark's Lisa Phillips earned medalist honors with a 52. At Paiute, Palo Verde outshot Cimarron 253-265 despite the efforts of Cimarron's Rachel Miranda, who paced all players with a 46. -- BOYS TENNIS -- Durango's No. 1 singles player, Matt Sarkis, was 3-0 to lead the Trailblazers to a 15-7 1/2 victory over visiting Moapa Valley. Adam Kunkel and Mitch Carlson were 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for Durango.
