IRL fans get chances to mingle with drivers

By Jeff Wolf
Review-Journal

Racing fans will have plenty of opportunities to meet Indy Racing League drivers next week during a weeklong schedule of activities leading to the last major race weekend of the year in Southern Nevada.
The Pep Boys Indy Racing League's Vegas.com 500 is Sept. 26 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It will be preceded by The Orleans 250 NASCAR Craftsman Trucks Series race Sept. 24, and NASCAR Winston West stock cars will be featured the following day.
The IRL Experience, which packs two 54-foot trailers with a 12-seat racing simulator, 24-seat theater and other interactive displays, will be at Saturn of West Sahara (5325 W. Sahara Ave.) from Monday through Wednesday, with an appearance by Las Vegan Davey Hamilton from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Local driver Sam Schmidt of Henderson is scheduled to sign autographs from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Saturn of Henderson in the Valley Auto Mall in Henderson.
In addition, both drivers will join Indy 500 champions Eddie Cheever and Johnny Rutherford, points leader Greg Ray and other IRL regulars in the Karting for Kids race to benefit the speedway's Children's Charities. A two-hour go-kart race, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the speedway, will also include amateur drivers representing corporations that bought go-karts and entries into the race.
-- SPEEDWAY ACTION -- The only activity at the speedway this weekend is the weekly Friday Night Drags, which begin at 5:30 p.m. In addition to the regular "test and tune" program, there will be a bracket race for members of the Toyota Supra Owners Club.
The next race on the 3/8-mile paved oval will be Oct. 9 with an open competition for Modifieds and Legends, with Late Models returning Nov. 6. No dust will fly on the dirt oval until a special IMCA show Nov. 12-13, and the final dirt event of the year is Dec. 4.
-- SCORE ON TV -- Last weekend's SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 was filmed and will be aired on the Speedvision Network, available on some satellite disk systems, at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Oct. 8.
