LV golf gets British boost

The Las Vegas Invitational got a new name and an infusion of cash Tuesday, when London-based Invensys PLC, a global electronics, software and systems company, became the title sponsor and boosted the purse from $2.6 million to $4.25 million.
      The tournament will be known as the Invensys Classic at Las Vegas and will feature the richest purse in a co-sponsored tournament on the PGA Tour. First prize in this year's event, scheduled to be played Oct. 11 to 15 at the Tournament Players Club at Summerlin, the Desert Inn and an third local course to be announced, will be $765,000.

Bishop named to new diocese

Bishop Daniel F. Walsh, who has led Southern Nevada's Roman Catholic community since 1987, has been named bishop of the troubled Diocese of Santa Rosa, Calif.
      Pope John Paul II made the appointment Tuesday morning. Walsh is to be installed as bishop of Santa Rosa May 22.
