Defense dealt blow

A jailhouse informer who told a defense investigator that authorities recruited him to steal privileged documents from the cell of Rick Tabish refused to repeat his account in court Monday.
      After David Gomez refused to answer any questions, District Judge Joseph Bonaventure denied a defense bid to play a tape of the May statement that the inmate gave to defense investigator Jim Thomas.

Safety at concert police's first care

The UNLV Police Department earlier this year conducted a military-style raid on students to seize four Ecstasy tablets and a cache of perfumed talcum powder, but on Friday it made only one drug-related arrest at a concert promoting marijuana as its central theme.
      Many tributes were made to the cannabis plant during the Up In Smoke rap concert -- large replicas of pot leaves loomed on stage, T-shirts bore reefer-related images and frequent clouds of pot smoke drifted toward the university-owned center's ceiling.
