Jury awards $1.8 million to man who slipped

REVIEW-JOURNAL

A District Court jury Thursday awarded a local man $1.8 million in a civil case arising from a fall at a supermarket.

John Gumm, 42, sued Albertson's after he slipped on a puddle of water and fell at its store at Westcliff Drive and Rainbow Boulevard. The store now is owned by Raley's.

Attorney Randall Mainor said his client suffered neck and back injuries in the spill that occurred about 4 a.m. on May 30, 1997.

Mainor and attorney Robert Cottle contended that the night crew had ignored a request to clean up the water about 30 minutes before Gumm arrived at the store.
