Parole Board rejects petition from killer
Associated Press CARSON CITY -- Simon Macias, sentenced to a life term in prison for the stabbing death of his wife, lost Thursday in a bid to get the Nevada Parole Board to release him. The panel told Macias, jailed five years ago for the murder of Susan Figeley Macias, that he could try again in three years. A Parole Board spokeswoman said Macias was turned down because of the nature and severity of the crime. No other specifics were provided. The parole request was opposed by Carol Nicoletti of Sparks, the mother of the 19-year-old murder victim, who gathered more than 10,000 signatures on a petition aimed at keeping Macias behind bars.
It's the second time Nicoletti mounted a crusade to prevent Macias' release. In his first parole bid in 1997, she collected 12,150 signatures of people opposed to his release. "I'm not a quitter," Nicoletti has said. "This is personal for me. This is No. 1 in my life." The victim's body, wrapped in duct tape, was dumped in the desert near Henderson. In a plea bargain following a bungled investigation, Macias pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with possible parole. As part of the bargain, prosecutors dropped two charges of lewdness with girls under the age of 14 brought against Macias after investigators found film in his car with pornographic pictures of the girls.
