Panthers' Lane faces drug, weapon charge JACKSON, Tenn. -- Fred Lane of the Carolina Panthers was arrested Thursday on a drug and a weapon charge. The reserve running back was released on $1,000 bail and told to return to court March 2. The 24-year-old Lane was arrested early Thursday when officers found 1.3 grams of marijuana and a .22-caliber rifle in his car, police said. He was charged with possession of a deadly weapon and marijuana. Bucs fire Shula as offensive coordinator TAMPA, Fla. -- Mike Shula is out as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator barely a week after coach Tony Dungy said a change of leadership wasn't necessary to jump-start a sputtering attack. The Buccaneers failed to get into the end zone on offense in five games this season, including two weeks ago when a late touchdown gave the St. Louis Rams an 11-6 victory over Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship Game. It's official: Saints name Haslett coach NEW ORLEANS -- Jim Haslett knows all about the New Orleans Saints' bleak history. He was once part of it as an assistant. Now Haslett is back as coach armed with a plan to pull the losingest team in the NFL out of an eight-year slump. "I don't want to talk about numbers," Haslett said. "But I'll promise this, we'll have a well-run program that plays hard and does all the right things that are conducive to winning." Although there were reports on Wednesday that Haslett had taken the job, Saints general manager Randy Mueller said the deal wasn't struck until about 9 a.m. Thursday. Lawyer says Lewis unaware of stabbing ATLANTA --Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis was unaware two men had been killed in a brawl when he and others left a Super Bowl party in a limousine, his lawyer said. The Baltimore Ravens star didn't know about the stabbings until he heard news reports hours later, lawyer Ed Garland said Thursday.
"He did not have a knife, he did not use a knife, he did not engage in a fight, he did not promote in any way a fight," Garland said. An arrest warrant drawn up by Atlanta police said Lewis "repeatedly stabbed" the two victims, but Garland said that was inaccurate. Lewis is charged with two counts of murder in the slayings early Monday of Richard Lollar, 24, and Jacinth "Shorty" Baker, 21, outside a lounge in Atlanta's Buckhead entertainment district. He is being held until a Feb. 14 bond hearing. Jim Brown alleges police overreaction LOS ANGELES -- Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown claimed police overreacted by sending 14 patrol cars and a helicopter to break up a teen-ager's birthday party at his home last week. Brown said he intends to file a formal complaint against the Los Angeles Police Department. Police had no official comment on the allegations. A neighbor may have complained about the pool party, which was attended by about 50 people, a spokesperson for Brown said, adding that the party was to celebrate the 18th birthday of a daughter of a friend of Brown's. U.S. boat closer to America's Cup finals AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- It was more of a placid parade than a competitive race in AmericaOne's runaway triumph that moved it within one victory of the America's Cup finals. A victory parade may not be far off if skipper Paul Cayard continues his remarkable comeback and keeps dominating the opposition. His gray and green yacht led all the way as it sailed away from Prada of Italy on the first two of three upwind legs on the six-leg course, winning by 1 minute, 6 seconds for his third straight victory and a 4-3 lead in the best-of-9 challenger finals. Bruins suspend forward Murphy BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins suspended forward Joe Murphy until further notice as punishment for what the club said was insubordination. Mike O'Connell, the team's assistant general manager and vice president of hockey operations, issued a statement announcing the action.
