Defending champ wins pole position for 24-hour race
Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- James Weaver captured the pole for Saturday's Rolex 24 at Daytona, the second year in a row the Dyson Racing Team has started from the inside spot on the front row. Weaver, last year's winner and top qualifier, ran a fast lap of 126.889 mph in the inaugural event of the Grand American Road Racing Series. The Dyson team started from the pole position in last year's Rolex 24 and won the 24-hour endurance event. Joining Weaver on the front row for the Rolex 24 in the SportsRacer class will be Alex Caffi, driver of the No. 12 Risi Competizione Ferrari 333 SP. Caffi posted a qualifying speed of 125.635 mph.
Canadian Ron Fellows grabbed the top spot in the Grand Am GTO class, driving the No. 3 Chevrolet Corvette. Fellows beat rival Tommy Archer, in a Oreca Dodge Viper, to the top spot with a speed of 121.032 m.p.h. around the 3.56-mile road course. Qualifying in the top spot for the American GT class in the Grand Am Series was Craig Conway in a Chevrolet Camaro. Dirk Mueller posted the top speed to grab the pole for the GTU class.
