Prep standout set to pick school
Cheyenne tackle Lynn McGruder says he will choose to attend either UNLV or Tennessee today.
By Mark Anderson Review-Journal
The announcement should come today. Lynn McGruder, considered the state's top football prospect by recruiting experts, said he will announce today which school he will attend. McGruder, a defensive tackle at Cheyenne High School, said the choice is between UNLV and Tennessee. "It's pretty even,'' he said. He said Thursday night he planned to have a long conversation later that evening with family members. He said he also planned to talk with Hunkie Cooper, a former UNLV star who plays for Arizona in the Arena Football League. Cooper also is a color commentator for UNLV football games. McGruder said he didn't want to make a hasty decision, as he did last weekend when he orally committed to Tennessee and later changed his mind. "There were distractions over everything, and everybody else wants to see that I make the right decision,'' McGruder said. "You can never leave UNLV out because that's the home school and because they've been so good and patient. "(The commitment to Tennessee) got out and was on the Internet and everything ... before I backed off.'' He said the commitment to Tennessee occurred before he discussed the decision with those close to him.
"I want to have a meeting and let everybody know what's in my heart,'' McGruder said. "I want to drop it to them and let them know. "It will be my decision, but I want them to hear me out.'' McGruder (6-foot-3, 285 pounds) was a second-team USA Today All-American. In addition to UNLV and Tennessee, he considered Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Texas. Meanwhile, the Rebels are awaiting word on whether defensive end Anton Palepoi (6-5, 275) will sign. He committed to Utah, but reconsidered and hasn't announced a decision. Palepoi played at Dixie College in St. George, Utah, and has torn allegiances. His sister attends UNLV, but his girlfriend goes to Utah. Although signing day was Wednesday, McGruder and Palepoi have until April 1 to make their decisions official. One name not listed among UNLV's signees this week was Los Angeles Harbor College defensive back Demetrious Williams (5-11, 185). He committed to UNLV in December, but the Rebels withdrew their scholarship offer. He reportedly had 72 tackles, 11 pass breakups and three interceptions. However, L.A. Harbor sports information director Gary Wood said he reviewed videotape of five games last season and recorded two assisted tackles in one game, one solo tackle in another and nothing in the other three games.
