Michael Beardslee grew up watching his father suspend assistants, sprout scarves from his sleeves, vanish and reappear. He was a magician. As a performer, the elder Beardslee showed courage, unflinchingly eating flames. And he was a master salesman, convincing audiences he could make himself and their cares vanish.
      These days, Beardslee works his own magic, helping information flow and computer systems run as head of consulting firm IT Strategies International Corp. And he showed the same ability to make companies believe in his work, signing deals with Nevada Power Co., Southwest Gas Corp., Mirage Resorts, the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the cities of Henderson and Las Vegas.

Interstate receiver appointed

Chief District Judge Lee Gates on Monday appointed a receiver selected by state officials for insolvent Interstate Mortgage Group, prompting a protest from a lawyer representing investors.
      Attorney John Netzorg, who represents some of Interstate's 1,000 investors', said he will appeal Gates' decision to the state Supreme Court.
