Review-Journal
An Arizona man killed Saturday in a boating accident on the Colorado River has been identified as Colin C. Hoagland.
Hoagland, 56, of Meadview, Ariz., and his son Michael Petersen, who lives in Virginia, were passengers on a 48-foot tour boat operated by Canyon Jet Boat Services of Meadview when the 8 a.m. accident happened.
The boat, which seats 54 people, was about a quarter-mile north of Quartermaster Canyon in the Grand Canyon National Park when it struck a sand bar.
The impact thrust Hoagland against a bench seat. After the accident, he complained of chest and back pain and difficulty breathing, the Mohave County Sheriff's office said. The boat's captain radioed for help, which took more than an hour to reach the remote area on the upper reaches of the river, officials said.
Hoagland died at the scene. Petersen suffered minor lacerations to his head and was taken to the Kingman Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Deputies are investigating exactly how the accident occurred.
