TENNIS Hewitt advances in RCA Championships INDIANAPOLIS -- Top-ranked and top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the third round of the RCA Championships on Wednesday, but two of the top four seeds did not accompany him. Hewitt outlasted Alberto Martin 6-3, 7-5 and will play 14th-seeded Greg Rusedski, who advanced by beating Lionel Roux, 6-3, 6-2. Second-seeded Marat Safin withdrew before his match, blaming an upper respiratory infection. Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the fourth seed, absorbed his second early ouster in two weeks, losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 to 18-year-old Mario Ancic. Also: Andy Roddick overpowered Justin Gimelstob 6-2, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington. Roddick, the No. 2 seed, will play No. 16 seed Fernando Meligeni, who beat Atilla Savolt, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. Todd Martin, seeded 10th, was knocked out by Alex Kim, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Jennifer Capriati, the second seed, defeated qualifier Sarah Taylor 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the Rogers AT&T Cup in Montreal. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Air Force's Blew switched back to QB AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- Senior Bryan Blew is an Air Force quarterback again after being switched to wide receiver in the off-season. Blew backed up starting quarterback Chance Harridge during scrimmages Wednesday. "We just felt like, where we are as a football team, and with the progress of some of the guys at wide-out, that the best thing was to move (Blew) back to quarterback," offensive coordinator Chuck Peterson said. Also: Two high-profile Arkansas players who had run-ins with the law will not be suspended, Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt said. Defensive back Ken Hamlin pleaded guilty last month to second-offense driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to 10 days in jail. Running back Cedric Cobbs was sentenced to 20 hours of community service, six months of probation and was fined $700 after being found guilty last month of marijuana possession, driving while intoxicated and speeding. UCLA defensive end Asi Faoa, a fourth-year junior, has agreed to pay $100,000 to former student Rodrigo De Zubiria, whom he punched at a fraternity party more than two years ago, but only if Faoa plays in the NFL within three years after completing his college eligibility. Faoa pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge Sept. 4 and was sentenced to 180 days in jail. He also was suspended for the first two games. He probably will serve his jail time after this season. MISCELLANEOUS Swaim, Oh fall in U.S. Women's Amateur SCARBOROUGH, N.Y. -- Courtney Swaim, the medalist from Sugar Hill, Ga., who set a 36-hole qualifying record of 135 on Tuesday in the U.S. Women's Amateur, was upset by Elizabeth Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., in the round of 64, 2 and 1. UNLV freshman Sunny Oh of Torrance, Calif., lost in the round of 32 to Janangelo, 4 and 3. Earlier, Oh defeated Hana Kim of Los Angeles, 1 up. Also: Utah is favored to win the 2002 Mountain West Conference women's volleyball title after getting six first-place votes and 48 points in a vote of the eight coaches. Defending regular-season champion Colorado State was second with 40 points, Brigham Young was third with 39 points, followed by San Diego State, UNLV, Wyoming, New Mexico and Air Force. Henderson resident Richie Hearn, who broke his right ankle in a crash Sunday in the Belterra Casino Indy 300 in Sparta, Ky., was released from a hospital in Indianapolis. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League's medical director, said Hearn would be out eight to 10 weeks, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. Freedom's Daughter, a 2-year-old filly who won the Schuylerville Stakes on July 24 at Saratoga Race Course, died Monday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Trainer Todd Pletcher said the initial diagnosis is that she died of Colitis X, a disease of the large intestine. Larry Bird will present Magic Johnson for induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame on Sept. 28 in Springfield, Mass. The New York Rangers re-signed center Roman Lyashenko and defenseman Tom Poti. |
