But so far, it's unclear how the activities will be paid for -- and whether city taxpayers will be asked to fund them. Goodman said the celebration will begin May 15, 2004, exactly one year before Las Vegas turns 100 years old. City staff were directed earlier this week to begin planning cultural events and educational programs designed to raise awareness of the city's history as the anniversary approaches. A Centennial Celebration Committee, made up of community leaders appointed by the City Council, is heading up the planning. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority also will be involved, Goodman said. "We're going to make it a party that Las Vegas will never forget," Goodman said. |
