COLUMN: NORM!
Trump finds it takes more than a name to get a deal
Donald Trump got trumped last week when he tried to ace out Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson.
After learning that Wynn and Adelson were probably going to win two of the three gaming licenses up for grabs in Macao, Trump made an 11th-hour move.
Forgoing the expense of creating multimillion-dollar presentations with architectural drawings, schematics and artwork, Trump apparently thought his name would be enough.
He showed Macao's licensing board photos of his Atlantic City properties and hoped his reputation would be enough.
He was told it was too late to enter the contest and that he missed the boat by failing to submit the proper paperwork.
Wynn and Adelson moved into the semifinals for the lucrative licenses.
Can't Buy Me Love
Former Beatle Paul McCartney is mulling what we hear is a monstrous $4 million offer to perform at the MGM Grand on April 6.
The British media is claiming the number is closer to $5 million, which would be a record for any British musical group.
At that princely sum, there are questions whether the event will pay for itself, but the MGM's strategy is all about bringing in high rollers, especially Beatles-era big spenders.
Back to Basics
Las Vegas' return-to-risque approach was front-page news in USA Today's weekend edition in an article headlined "Skin and sin are in again on the Las Vegas Strip."
Forget about the new "family-friendly" Vegas, wrote the author, whose story was accompanied by a photo of a La Femme dancer seated on the show's red, oversized, pillow-lips couch.
"After nearly a decade or more of more-or-less behaving, the Las Vegas casinos are rediscovering their naughtier sides with a new wave of shows, nightclubs and bars aimed squarely at the adult-only crowd."
George Maloof, owner of the new Palms resort and casino, is characterized as "the poster boy for the new adult-oriented Vegas. The 37-year-old wunderkind touts what's being called the sexiest, most adult casino ever built."
The Scene and Heard
Rob Powers, vice president of communications for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, is the headline speaker at Las Vegas Advertising Federation's luncheon Thursday at Sazio's (The Orleans). His topic: "How to keep your client OUT of the press." Like Ross Perot, I'll be all ears, sitting in the front row.
Sightings
Hilton hotel heiress Paris Hilton, celebrating her 21st birthday with a Barbie Doll-decorated cake and boyfriend, Tommy Hilfiger model, Jason Shaw, Saturday at Light (Bellagio). Dancing the night away was soon-to-be married "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. ...
