Rock's desert run to propose to Anderson carries hefty price

By ROBIN LEACH
SPECIAL TO THE REVIEW-JOURNAL

Kid Rock's engagement to Pamela Anderson in the desert turned into an expensive side-trip.

The 1961 pink Cadillac rented out to Rock as a prop for the proposal blew up on the way back to Las Vegas and the owner is seeking $12,000 in repairs.

The car, once owned by heavyweight boxer Sonny Liston, was part of the ambience when recording artist Uncle Kracker, dressed as Elvis, delivered the $24,000 ring to Rock.

The deal gone bad has Caddy owner "Buffalo" Jim Barrier burning, burning.

"We warned him not to take it more than a mile," said Barrier, the owner of Auto & Marine Electric.

"It normally rents for $250 per hour with a driver but Kid Rock wanted to drive it himself and even beat me down to an even $1,000 for 24 hours. So I sorta lost money there," growled Barrier, who is well-known for his ongoing legal run-ins with next-door neighbor Crazy Horse Too.

"I'm not going to take legal action yet, but I haven't heard from them now in three weeks, and I am getting antsy," Barrier said.

"They called to see if they could buy it, so I had it appraised for $35,000. But they still got 10 grand of repairs to put on top of that. So now it's either buy it, fix it or pay up," he said.

The Skinny on Skin

Palms President George Maloof opens one of the world's most exotic day playgrounds and outdoor nightclubs on May 17.

Skin is 75,000 square feet of aquatic voyeurism with two pools: one where go-go girls in ice-cube cages emerge from a lavender pool, and a second mermaid cove with elevated portholes and three live model mermaids.

Hot area designer Gina Boccadoro has created six supersexy outfits for the 16 beauties working there.

Owners Michael Morton and Scott DeGraff say it's the next evolution in destination resort indulgence.

No wonder E! television selected Skin for the finals of its nationwide search for an on-air replacement for Brooke Burke, host of "Wild On!"

The new host will be crowned July 12 and 13.

Just Asking

Why isn't a Madonna-approved show being shopped locally by her brother getting the hottest reaction? The dance-musical includes three Madonna look-alikes playing the singer at different ages of her career. ... Did singer Garth Brooks come thisclose to signing contracts for a new country entertainment-sports restaurant concept only to see it all go up in smoke?

Etc., Etc.

Mary Hart and I helped celebrate the 21st anniversary reunion of Entertainment Tonight last weekend in Los Angeles. The show was launched in 1981 as America's first non-network, satellite-delivered daily live show. ... Even the men wore pink boas to celebrate Rita Rudner's one-year anniversary at New York-New York. Hotel honcho Felix Rappaport gave $5,000 to her favorite charity, Aid for AIDS of Nevada, and named a slot machine after Rudner.

The Punch Line

"Why do I drink champagne for breakfast? Doesn't everyone?" -- Sir Noel Coward, British playwright.
