Bond issue approved for parks, wildlife, recreational projects

A statewide bond issue that will raise property taxes to fund parks, wildlife, culture and recreation received overwhelming voter support Tuesday.
With nearly complete results in, about 60 percent of voters favored the $200 million initiative, which will pay for a variety of open space and recreational projects. There was no organized opposition to the proposal, placed on the ballot by the Legislature and backed by The Nature Conservancy.
The bonds will cost the owner of a $200,000 home about $1.51 a month.
Question 1 will allocate:
$65.5 million to Nevada's Division of State Lands to provide grants for state agencies, local governments or nonprofit organizations for various programs including recreational trails, urban parks, habitat conservation, open spaces and general natural resource protection projects.
$35 million to Nevada's Department of Cultural Affairs to establish a museum at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve.
$27 million to Nevada's Division of State Parks for property acquisition or capital improvements and renovations.
$27.5 million to Nevada's Division of Wildlife for property acquisition, facility development and renovation or wildlife habitat improvements.
$25 million to the Las Vegas Springs Preserve in Clark County for planning and developing the preserve, providing wildlife habitat and constructing support facilities.
$10 million to Clark County for development of a regional wetlands park at the Las Vegas Wash.
$10 million to Washoe County for enhancement and restoration of the Truckee River corridor.
