PHOTO: Journey of Protest

Jeff McKenzie flashes a peace sign Friday outside the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration offices in North Las Vegas. McKenzie and other so-called "family spirit walkers" arrived at the Energy Department facility after 30 of them journeyed to Southern Nevada from Los Alamos, N.M. The trek began Aug. 9 at Tsangawi, a sacred American Indian site in New Mexico, and continued through areas affected by uranium mining, nuclear weapons production and testing. Their anti-nuclear campaign, backed by the Las Vegas-based Shundahai Network, will continue next week at the Nevada Test Site and the Energy Department's nuclear waste repository site at Yucca Mountain, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
