EDITORIAL: Inching further to the left
The time-tested adage in presidential politics is that, in the early stages of a campaign, candidates try to appeal to their party's activist base (Democrats on the left, Republicans on the right) ... and once the nomination seems secure, they attempt to "move to the center" to broaden their appeal.

Not so with Democratic front-runner Howard Dean. As the physician and former Vermont governor continues to distance himself from the pack, the farther to the left his rhetoric moves.


EDITORIAL: Moving water
As if Southern Nevada and the urban West don't have enough water worries with the ongoing drought, a case before the U.S. Supreme Court could complicate the issue even further.

In a matter that should be decided by the middle of next year, the justices will rule in a Florida case whether water diversions into the Everglades require permits under federal anti-pollution laws.

Like some families, Las Vegas has been able to open a few Christmas presents before Dec. 25. From Secretary of State Dean Heller, for example, all of Nevada has received a single system of electronic voting machines, and eventually each will have a paper record of votes cast.
