Las Vegas Review-Journal senior reporter Kevin Iole has been named Nevada Sportswriter of the Year for 2002 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Iole, 43, has been at the Review-Journal since 1990 and has covered high school sports, baseball, hockey, golf, boxing and gaming in addition to general assignment work.
"Kevin is perhaps the most proficient and prolific journalist I've had the pleasure of working with," Review-Journal sports editor Jim Fossum said. "His enthusiasm and passion for his job are unmatched."
Named Outstanding Journalist by the Nevada Press Association in 1999, Iole also won the NSSA award in 1986 at the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press and in 1999 at the Review-Journal. It marks the fifth straight year a Review-Journal sportswriter has won the award.
Iole will be honored April 28 along with local broadcaster Bob Blum at the NSSA's annual awards banquet in Salisbury, N.C.
Rick Reilly of Sports Illustrated and Joe Buck of Fox are the national winners, while Bob Wolff and the late Will McDonough of the Boston Globe will be enshrined in the NSSA Hall of Fame.
