Davis KOs Lobo in 42 seconds for title

By KEVIN IOLE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Rogerio Lobo seemed eager to fight Kelvin Davis and jumped on the Las Vegan as soon as the opening bell rang. Barely a minute later, Lobo deeply regretted that move.

Davis knocked Lobo out with a booming overhand right, winning his cruiserweight bout in 42 seconds on a three-fight card at the Aladdin to take the IBA Continental Americas cruiserweight title.

Davis, 190, trains exclusively against heavyweights and sparred with Clifford Etienne, who fights Mike Tyson tonight. Davis also worked with Hasim Rahman and Maurice Harris, among others.

Davis said he wasn't unhappy about the quick ending.

"I get my work in in the gym," said Davis, who improved to 19-1-1 with his 15th knockout. "I wanted to get out of there as quickly as I could."

Lobo, 188 1/2, met Davis at the bell and seemed to want to go toe-to-toe. Davis ripped Lobo with a body shot and Lobo sagged into the ropes. An uppercut and a hook left him reeling only 20 seconds in.

"He acted like he thought he could walk through me," said Davis, who hopes to fight Vassilly Jirov for the IBF cruiserweight title this year. "I said, `Great, let's do it.' "

Davis knocked Etienne out cold in training and did the same to Lobo, who took several minutes to get to his feet.

That scene was replayed in the chief undercard bout after 2000 U.S. Olympian Dante Craig was stopped at 2:48 of the fourth round by journeyman Marcos Primera, 151. Craig, 153 1/2, had no defense for Primera's overhand right and was saved by referee Toby Gibson.

Craig was not responding well more than 20 minutes afterward and was taken to Valley Hospital as a precaution.

In the other fight, Shaun George, 178 1/2, knocked out Terrance Smith, 180, at 2:06 of the second round. Smith simply quit and stayed on one knee awaiting referee Jay Nady's 10-count.
