Las Vegas Valley students excel at a variety of activities




The following list outlines some of the accomplishments by students from throughout Southern Nevada:

• Foothill High School students of the quarter for 2002-2003 include: Vigan Ajro, science; Anna Gang, business; Rebecca Ginos, art; Jennifer Hague, foreign language; Jeri Hendricks, math, Courtney Kerby, physical education/health/careers; Karen Mogren, family and consumer sciences; Rebecca Ritchie, performing arts; Tiffany Sanders, individualized programs; Stephen Tarver, social studies; and Cassandra Zitzmann, English.

• Centennial High School students of the month for January were: Nicole Antos, physical education; Chelsea Bayne, business; Ryan Frawley, industrial arts; Kaeley Fukuyama, performing arts; James Garrett, NJROTC; Alisa Hagen, art; Kendra Jackson, English; Laura O'Connor, home economics; Tanalee Robinson, math; Joseph Satava, social studies; Justin Schmidhofer, computers; Devin Ward, science; and Blake Wise, foreign language.

Centennial High School's Student Council hosted a 2 1/2-mile charity jog for the Make a Wish Foundation, an organization for cancer patients, Jan. 29. Students and staff collectively raised $1,316.

• Centennial High School's Forensics Team competed at the Foothill High School Invitational Jan. 24 and 25. The following students earned first-place awards: Afton Brown, varsity expository, and Meaghan Windfield, novice congress.

• Green Valley High School volleyball player Jennifer Todd was selected as the 2002-2003 Gatorade Nevada High School Volleyball Player of the Year. She qualifies for consideration for the National High School Volleyball Player of the Year Award.

• Green Valley High School senior Kimble McNair has been selected as the Rotary Student of the Month for January. He has maintained a 3.85 grade-point average and will graduate with an honors diploma. He is the manager of the varsity boys basketball team, vice-chairman of the Teenage Republicans group, and also is involved in varsity football, Spanish honor society, Varsity Quiz and Key Club.

• Green Valley High School art students competed in the Las Vegas Region Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, sponsored by the Las Vegas Art Museum. Mikki Paek won for printmaking, Shawna Mulder won for painting and printmaking, Joe Halk won for ceramics, and Amanda Dunajski and Rory Glass won for their 2-D portfolios.

American Visions awards were given to Johnathon Heeb for mixed media, Claudia Jimenez for drawing, Angeli Johnson for painting, Richard Rube for photography and Amy Duke for ceramics. The students all received a $100 cash prize.

Gold Key Awards and a $500 scholarship were given to Dianah Nelson for photography and Kelsey Page for ceramics. Their work will be sent to New York for national-level judging.
