PHOTO: Everything's Coming Up Gophers

A pocket gopher emerges from its hole at Sunset Park Friday. Wildlife officials say a break in the cool weather can cause animals to emerge. At Red Rock Canyon, rangers each year watch for the emergence of a desert tortoise they've named Mojave Max. Max came out of his burrow on Friday as well. The March 7 appearance was "the earliest we've ever seen," according to Park Ranger Kathy August.
