Bills would raise lawmakers' pay

CARSON CITY -- Two bills to put more money in the pockets of state lawmakers were among more than 200 measures introduced Monday in the Nevada Legislature.

SB391 by Sen. Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, would let lawmakers collect up to $20,000 for income lost because of service during regular 120-day sessions that are held every other year.

The bill would have legislators file a post-session request with the director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau, who is appointed by lawmakers.

SB368 by Sen. Dean Rhoads, R-Tuscarora, would reimburse lawmakers up to $5,000 in between sessions for travel to public meetings in their districts. The travel reimbursement would stop after a lawmaker files for re-election.

The state's 63 legislators are paid $7,800, or $130 a day, for the first 60 days, and then their salary stops.

Lawmakers also get $85 a day for expenses for the full 120 days. Those who live more than 50 miles from Carson City get an extra $506 a month housing allowance.
