ROUNDUP: BALANCED ATTACK: Jaguars spread it around

Seven Desert Pines players score TDs in rout of Rancho

By JEFF WOLLARD
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Desert Pines football coach Leon Evans wanted a victory Friday night, and he was prepared to use his entire offensive arsenal to get one.

The strategy worked, as seven Jaguars scored en route to a key 48-15 road victory over Northeast Division rival Rancho.

"We wanted to spread the ball around and use a lot of different kids," Evans said. "(Rancho) had a hard time adjusting early."

Those problems began for the Rams right on Desert Pines' opening drive, when Steve Golden capped a six-play, 73-yard march with a 15-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

The 10th-ranked Jaguars scored twice more in the first quarter, with quarterback Josh Webster taking in a 1-yard keeper and Jonathan Stoldorf catching a 55-yard Webster pass to make it 21-0.

Though Rancho's offense moved effectively at times, several key drives ended on turnovers. Desert Pines (5-2, 3-0 Northeast) capitalized, scoring 28 points off three fumbles and two interceptions.

A 24-yard field goal by Rancho's Bryson Beasley made it 21-3 at halftime, but the Jaguars were just getting started. Jeffery Long, Mike Washington, Donte Minton and Ashton Ariola each scored as Desert Pines racked up 204 of its 422 total yards in the second half.

Golden (120 yards on 16 carries) and Minton (114 on 13) were nearly unstoppable on the ground, while Stoldorf made two key receptions for 77 yards.

The Rams (4-3, 1-2) scored on late touchdowns by Rick Holman (74 yards on four carries) and Deshawn Richard (49 yards on two receptions).

Evans considered his team's victory an important step toward a league title.

"I'm really pleased," he said. "We got off to a slow start and we had a lot of adversity, but I'm proud of these guys. They came in here tonight and just battled."

Palo Verde 14, Coronado 0 -- At Coronado, Jamal Brumfield opened the second half with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, helping the third-ranked Panthers defeat the No. 5 Cougars.

Palo Verde (7-0) held Coronado (5-2) to 93 total yards and came up with key plays on special teams.

The Panthers' first scoring drive was kept alive by a roughing-the-punter penalty on fourth down. Six plays later, quarterback Jarrell Harrison scored on a 1-yard dive and Palo Verde led 7-0.

After Brumfield's touchdown, the Panthers' defense took over. Coronado turned the ball over on downs three times in the second half, and its final possession ended with 5:08 left when Palo Verde linebacker Matt Ladesic intercepted a pass that Brumfield tipped.

Brumfield led the Panthers with 79 yards on 21 carries, and Tyree Walton added 77 yards on 16 carries.
