NEON THURSDAY: Rock show at
Double Down
In a male-dominated rock world, the Double Down Saloon tonight stages an actual woman-fronted rock band, Manda and the Marbles.
The band sounds inspired by such acts as the Go-Go's and Blondie, although it is promoted as a cross between the more independent Saint Etienne and the punk of the Buzzcocks.
British magazine State of Emergency has called Manda's pop songs "catchier than the syphilis in Bangkok." Opening acts include rock outfit the Displaced, plus what the Double Down bills as "Everyone's Favorite Drunken Midget Comic, Puppet the Psycho Dwarf."
Tonight's free show starts at 10 p.m. at the Double Down, 4640 Paradise Road. For more information, call 791-5775.
If you're looking for something to do for free before that, tonight is the first night for the "Pinhole" alternative photography exhibit of Darius Kuzmickas at the Winchester Community Center. Admission is free through Nov. 1. An artist's reception runs 5-7:30 p.m. today at the center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. For more information, call 455-7340.
