State delegates urge action against Enron

REVIEW-JOURNAL

Nevada's congressional delegation signed a letter Wednesday, urging the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to revoke Enron Corp.'s authority to sell wholesale power retroactively to the date that Enron violated rules.

The action would void the contract that Enron had with Nevada Power Co. and Sierra Pacific Power Co. and nullify the $330 million judgment that Enron won against the Nevada companies.

"The evidence now shows more clearly than ever that Enron manipulated the Western electricity market approximately 90 percent of the time during 2000 and 2001 and obtained more than $1.1 billion in illegal profits as a result," the letter states.

The letter was sent by Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign and Reps. Jim Gibbons, Shelley Berkley and Jon Porter.

Members of the Nevada delegation have sent FERC several letters, making similar comments and suggesting the agency take action that would protect Nevada from the Enron judgment.
