OPINION -- Sunday, March 07, 2004

Daily Opinion Cartoon

EDITORIAL: Donal 'Mike' O'Callaghan, 1929-2004
Donal "Mike" O'Callaghan's parents lost their farm in the Great Depression. The family moved to marginal land near Sparta, Wisc., where they struggled to make a living.

Young Mike joined the Marine Corps at age 16 ... but still missed World War II. By the time the Korean War broke out he'd joined the service again -- this time the Air Force -- and was stationed in Alaska.

EDITORIAL: 'The best in my memory'
Mike O'Callaghan was the best Nevada governor in my memory. While we've had several effective governors since Gov. Mike left office, he was as unique as the state he loved.

He was a governor of the people, not the special interests. His constituency was the plain folk of the state. He remembered the names of ordinary working stiffs from Elko to Las Vegas and greeted them with gusto on his frequent trips into the far reaches of the Silver State.

JOHN BRUMMETT: The titan John Kerry never was
John Kerry's nomination happened so quickly and on such uncertain and scant reasoning that Democrats may come down in a few days or weeks with a touch of buyer's remorse.

NEVADA VIEWS: Nuke shipments are safe
In an absence of complete information, it has proven easy for the opponents of the Yucca Mountain repository to raise fears about the transportation of used commercial nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste to the site.

LETTER: Inquiry is needed
To the editor: An editorial in Thursday's Review-Journal suggested that Nevada's soaring gasoline prices are entirely the result of market factors, and questioned the need for a federal inquiry, which I have requested.

THOMAS MITCHELL: Against the law to watch
I would like to propose an ordinance. Said ordinance would authorize any citizen to arrest and detain any elected official who, in his or her legislative capacity, knowingly enacts an ordinance or law that is constitutionally suspect.

STEVE SEBELIUS: The death of a hero
Former Gov. Mike O'Callaghan was the kind of man who commanded respect just by entering a room. And when you got to know him, that respect only grew.
