Young Mike joined the Marine Corps at age 16 ... but still missed World War II. By the time the Korean War broke out he'd joined the service again -- this time the Air Force -- and was stationed in Alaska.
EDITORIAL: 'The best in my memory'
Mike O'Callaghan was the best Nevada governor in my memory. While we've had several effective governors since Gov. Mike left office, he was as unique as the state he loved.
He was a governor of the people, not the special interests. His constituency was the plain folk of the state. He remembered the names of ordinary working stiffs from Elko to Las Vegas and greeted them with gusto on his frequent trips into the far reaches of the Silver State.
