PHOTO: On Cusp of Comeback

In 1952, when Frank Sinatra's career was in a downturn, among those who still called him friend were Jack Benny, left, the comic Ritz Brothers, and his wife, actress Ava Gardner, photographed together at the Desert Inn. Gardner, by some accounts, persuaded him to seek the role of Maggio in the 1953 film "From Here To Eternity." It's undisputed his performance won an Academy Award and launched a new and even bigger career.
