TASTE OF THE TOWN: Chefs to ride into market




I've heard of horsing around in the kitchen, but ...

Chefs Michael and Wendy Jordan of Rosemary's Restaurant and chef Tim Love of the Lonesome Dove Bistro in Fort Worth, Texas, will arrive on horseback at noon today at the Las Vegas Farmers' Market in Bruce Trent Park, 1600 N. Rampart Blvd.

They'll shop with a class from St. Christopher Catholic School in North Las Vegas for ingredients for tonight's fund-raising dinner for Spoons Across America, a program sponsored by the James Beard Foundation that teaches kids about fresh fruits and vegetables.

The trio also will ride on horseback to Rosemary's at 8125 W. Sahara Ave., arriving at 6:30 p.m. Love is traveling by bus and horseback from Fort Worth to Los Angeles. ...

The third annual Friends of Nevada dinner will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Boyd Dining Room in Frank and Estella Beam Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

The dinner is a benefit for the Poverello House, which provides shelter to homeless people. Planned and executed by UNLV students, the theme is "Great Chefs of Las Vegas." Tasting stations will feature dishes such as Emeril's jambalaya, Wolfgang Puck's bocconcini with roasted peppers and Nobu's black cod buffet. Tickets are $65 and include all food and an open bar. The next session of UNLV's student-prepared luncheons begins Oct. 20. Themes are The Rebel Bistro on Oct. 20, Panda Express on Nov. 3, A Day at the Beach on Nov. 10 and Qdoba Mexican Grill on Nov. 17. Luncheon hours are from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Boyd Dining Room. Prices are $2.95 to $8.95 per menu item. ...

The Capital Grille has opened on the third level of Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South. It serves lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and dinner from 5 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The menu leans heavily toward steaks, but there are plenty of other options, including a lobster and crab burger at lunch or a signature veal chop with Roquefort butter sauce at dinner. It's Puck-Toberfest at Wolfgang Puck's Bar & Grill at the MGM Grand, 3799 Las Vegas Blvd. South, through Oct. 31. The special menu features house-made bratwurst with red pepper marmalade and pretzel bread, roast pork loin with braised cabbage, potato purée and cider glaze; and pumpkin bread pudding, at $28 for the three courses. Beer pairings also are available. ...

A dinner featuring the wines of Concha Y Toro is scheduled for Oct. 24 at Todd's Unique Dining, 4350 E. Sunset Road in Henderson. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with an open bar, followed by a reception at 6:30 and dinner at 7. With an entree of tournedos of beef with braised short-rib sauce and crab gratin, the five-course dinner is $60 plus tax and tip. For reservations, call 259-8633. ...

Chef Gustav Mauler has announced his October wine events, as follows:

A dinner featuring the wines of Azure Bay of Australia is planned for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sazio at The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave. With an entree of Sicilian-style tagliata of beef, the four-course dinner is $38, plus tax and tip. For reservations, call 948-9500.

"It's No Sin to Zin" is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Spiedini at JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. With an entree of roast duck with sour cherry merlot sauce, the four-course dinner is $55, plus tax and tip. For reservations, call 869-8500. ...

Nine Fine Irishmen at New York-New York, 3790 Las Vegas Blvd. South, has introduced several new menu items from executive chef Kevin Dundon of Ireland. They include a pint of prawns with a prawn bisque chaser; crock of mussels with a white wine, saffron and leek broth; shepherd's pie; hearty Irish broth soup; seared beef salad; and warm chicken salad. ...

Six restaurants at Lake Las Vegas -- The Vineyard Ristorante and Bar, MiraLago Lakeside Mediterranean Cafe, Como's Restaurant, Medici Cafe and Terrace, Japengo and Cafe Tenuta -- are featuring Alaskan seafood entrees throughout October in conjunction with the resort's Wild About Alaska celebration. ...

Prices for the prix-fixe signature menus at Picasso at Bellagio, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd. South, have increased to $90 for the four-course tasting menu and $100 for the five-course degustation menu. ...
