Who lives in the 'hood?

Besides ethnicity, other ways to measure a population include looking at the age of residents, how long they have lived in Southern Nevada, the amount of education they possess and how many have children.

The ZIP code with the highest concentration of residents who are 65 or older -- which perhaps corresponds to a greater need for senior services, health care and public transportation -- is Boulder City's 89005, at 36 percent of the population. Within the Las Vegas Valley, the top ZIP code for share of seniors is 89104 -- between Charleston Boulevard and Sahara Avenue, east of the Strip -- at 29 percent, according to the 2004 Las Vegas Perspective.

The ZIP codes with the highest concentration of households with children -- which suggests a young population and need for recreation facilities, libraries and schools -- are 89142 (49 percent have families) and 89131 (47 percent). The ZIP code 89142 is east of Nellis Boulevard between Vegas Valley Drive and Charleston Boulevard; and 89131 is in the northwest, just east of U.S. 95, north of Centennial Parkway.
