No foul play suspected in death of infant girl

Clark County officials said Friday an autopsy will be performed on a 3-month-old girl who died in November at University Medical Center.

There are no suspicions of foul play in the death of Genesis Acosta-Garcia, who was in foster care at the time of her death.

However, the baby's natural mother, who is 12 years old, and the baby's grandmother are both asking that an autopsy be performed on the infant as a precaution to determine what killed the baby.

"The basic reason (the family is seeking an autopsy) was that the baby was healthy for two months, and then the baby ends up dead," said attorney Vincent Ochoa, who is representing the biological mother. "They were told by friends and family they should try and get an autopsy done."

Ochoa said the baby was born to a 12-year-old Las Vegas girl. The girl was 11 when the infant was conceived.

The man authorities allege is the infant's father, Carlos Noguera, 23, is charged with sexual assault and lewdness with a minor under the age of 14.

After the baby was born, Clark County officials took the baby into the custody of the Department of Family Services because of the age of the mother. The mother and the baby's grandmother, however, regularly visited with the baby while she was in foster care.

In November, the baby showed signs of illness, and she was taken to University Medical Center.

The baby died on Nov. 19.

An autopsy was not performed because the baby was under the care of a physician at the time, and doctors believed she died of natural causes, likely a viral infection.

But the baby's relatives sought the autopsy, and on Friday, a Family Court hearing master issued an order for an autopsy.

The coroner's office said it needed the order to perform the examination to determine a cause of death.
