Boasts and Toasts

If you want to help Kanye West ring out a very good year, here's hoping you thought ahead

By MIKE WEATHERFORD
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Kanye West's boastfulness has been known to land him in trouble. "My goals are the cockiest thing about me, not what I say out of my mouth," West said at the MGM Grand Garden on Dec. 6.

The Gin Blossoms will perform along with Cheap Trick and the Spin Doctors at the Fremont Street Experience.

If you're lucky, like Kanye West has been the entire year, you planned ahead for New Year's Eve.

With his Aladdin concert arguably the evening's hottest ticket, West says he wanted to ring out his ultra-successful 2005 on the Strip. However, "I made sure I took my New Year's Eve gig way early, because when you get too close, all the clubs are filled up anyway and you can't make money."

It might be too late to help performers make money on the gigs that gain prestige through exclusivity, such as another 2005 lucky guy, Rob Thomas, fronting Matchbox Twenty at the cozy Hard Rock Hotel on Saturday, with an encore performance Sunday.

But "exclusivity" is the last word associated with the Strip's biggest New Year's headliner, the one that motivated many indoor showroom attractions to stay home and watch TV. The free outdoor fireworks show, synchronized from the rooftops of 10 casinos, is the big draw for the lion's share of an estimated 300,000 revelers. The big bang has made it hard for any mere human attraction to compete ever since 2000 gave way to '01.

But West perpetuates the legend that he is no mere human, and his "Late Registration" album backed up the bravado. It built upon 2004's impressive debut, "The College Dropout," which itself came after a solid career as a producer for the likes of Jay-Z.

"My goals are the cockiest thing about me, not what I say out of my mouth," West said backstage at the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden on Dec. 6. He explained, "I'll go into the studio to make a new album, and I'll pop in (Stevie Wonder's) 'Songs in the Key of Life' or a Marvin Gaye record and attempt to beat that record.

"So if I say out loud, 'Yo, I'm trying to make an album better than "Songs in the Key of Life",' people would say, 'What's wrong with you?' "

As far as New Year's resolutions, "I set new goals for myself," he affirmed. "I've surpassed every dream that I had in high school. So at that point, you have to say, 'What are you going to do now?' I'm not going to quit, I'm going to start new stuff."

And some of that stuff, he says, will involve the cinema. "Actually I had a meeting with Quentin Tarrantino earlier today," he told reporters at the Billboard affair, then was whisked away by media handlers before he could explain if he was kidding.

As for the big outdoor show, Fireworks by Grucci is promising extra-special Vegas centennial flourishes for the giant fireworks display, complete with neon-colored fireworks.

Downtown, the neon-martini glow of Mayor Oscar Goodman will lead an expected 12,000 people in an 11:50 p.m. toast on Fremont Street, attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest toast, courtesy of Beaulieu Vineyard Wines.

That's only part of the party that launches at 5 p.m. The Fremont Street Experience has become a comparative bargain for New Year's -- a $40 ticket includes sets from Cheap Trick, Gin Blossoms and the Spin Doctors, if not the plastic footballs full of beer. That's about $20 less than it will cost to see impersonators of the Beatles, Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne at the Gold Coast.

Further proof of Las Vegas' catering to those who came of age in the '90s comes with Hootie & the Blowfish ringing in the year at the Silverton, and the Goo Goo Dolls as the featured act at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay.

The still-younger crowd will hone in on the nightclubs. It's all about being new there, so this weekend's unveiling of Jet inside The Mirage should be a flashy ticket. The tri-level, 15,000-square-foot club is bringing in Kid Rock to host the affair, where general admission tickets will set you back $200. Wynn Las Vegas, which stumbled out of the gate on the nightclub front, regroups to unveil the new Tryst on New Year's Eve.

Rival club Pure offers the less-flashy Hilton sister, Nicky, and her "Entourage" actor beau Kevin Connolly, as rival guest hosts. The Orleans Arena will become a cross between a nightclub and a Cirque du Soleil show in the hands of DJ Tièsto.

For the young at heart, some of Las Vegas' standing attractions offer an early start to get 'em in and get 'em out before the Strip gets too congested. Cirque du Soleil's "O" and "Mystere" both offer special matinees at 4:30 p.m. Comedian Rita Rudner moves her evening show to 5 p.m.

"It was my idea," says Rudner's husband-manager, Martin Bergman. "I can just about compete with Cirque du Soleil, but I can't compete with fireworks."
