Master Singers to perform Duke Ellington's 'Sacred Concert'
REVIEW-JOURNAL
The Las Vegas Master Singers and students from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Jazz Department perform Duke Ellington's "Sacred Concert" Sunday at 2 p.m. at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave.
Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn K. Jensen, the Master Singers will be joined by vocalist Laura Taylor.
Between 1965 and 1973, Ellington wrote three large works, called "sacred concerts," that combined elements of jazz, classical music, choral music, spirituals, gospel, blues and dance.
Describing these concerts as "the most important thing I have ever done," he said they allowed him to "say openly what I have been saying on my knees."
The event, a celebration of the Las Vegas Centennial and Black History Month, combines elements of all three concerts.
The program also will include the Master Singers and the Master Singers Concert Chorale performing a number of spirituals and the UNLV Jazz Ensemble contributing additional jazz arrangements.
Proceeds will benefit the Susan L. Johnson Scholarship Fund and the UNLV Jazz Department.
The Susan L. Johnson Scholarship Fund, established in 2002 to honor the Master Singers' founder, awards financial assistance to qualifying UNLV choral studies students.
Tickets are $25 general admission, $15 for students and $50 for Gold Circle patrons. The Gold Circle patron ticket includes reserved seating, a reception and door prizes.
Tickets will be available at the door or by calling 258-0329.
