North Las Vegas police arrested a student within the past six weeks for a sexual assault at Mojave High School during school hours, according to a press release from the department.
The press release did not give any specifics about the nature of the crime, when it happened, when the student was arrested or if the victim was also a student.
"Investigators are not releasing a lot of information in this case because the students involved are juveniles and due to the sensitivity of the crime," the release said.
The school is at Ann Road and Goldfield Street in North Las Vegas.
Principal Charity Varnado deferred all questions about the assault to the school district's communication office late Thursday. The office was closed.
School Board President Larry Mason said he was surprised that district officials had not notified him.
"If the district knew about it, I believe they should have told board members," Mason said. "At the same time, I'm glad it's been taking care of, and I hope it doesn't affect the good things going on at Mojave."

Suspicious package
closes courtyard
Las Vegas police Thursday night were investigating the origin of a suspicious package that prompted police to close the courtyard outside Las Vegas City Hall and police headquarters.
After receiving the package, which contained white powder and had threatening writing on it, two people took the package about 4 p.m. to the Police Department inside City Hall at 400 Stewart Ave. in downtown Las Vegas, police spokesman Bill Cassell said.
Police closed the courtyard until about 5:45 p.m.
The substance was tested and found to be safe, but Cassell refused to say what it was or what was written on the package because the investigation is ongoing.

Police say teen killed in crosswalk saved boy
A pregnant teenager who was killed when a speeding truck hit her in a crosswalk likely saved the life of a 10-year-old boy before she died, Reno police said.
The 15-year-old girl, who was seven months' pregnant, pushed the boy walking with her onto a sidewalk at South Meadows Parkway and Lauren Court at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Detective Troy Callahan told the Reno Gazette-Journal.
The driver of the truck, Andres Preciado, 18, Reno, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony reckless driving causing death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter after his Ford F-150 truck struck the teenager. Callahan said the juveniles had passed the center divider on South Meadows and that another vehicle had stopped for the crosswalk.
Callahan said Preciado was going almost twice the speed limit.

Court rejects appeal
of arson sentence
The Nevada Supreme Court has rejected a fourth appeal from a man sentenced to up to 46 years in prison for setting a house on fire in Las Vegas and dipping a cat in gasoline and tossing it into the flames.
The court ruled against William Manciano who, according to prosecutors, lived at the home with his girlfriend and her parents and became angry because she had other boyfriends.
Manciano was convicted in 1997 of arson, three counts of attempted murder and one count of maiming an animal. He was sentenced to up to 46 years in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years, and ordered to pay $77,250 in restitution.
On appeal, Manciano said his sentence was illegal and the award of restitution wasn't supported by evidence.
