Silverado football coach Doug Thornhill made no attempt to hide his excitement after his team's regular-season finale Friday.

Tyyler McNeace passed for 163 yards and ran for 76 to lead the Skyhawks to a 22-14 home victory over Green Valley.

More important, the win secured home-field advantage for Silverado in its opening-round playoff game next week against Canyon Springs.

"This game was mostly about home-field advantage to us," said Thornhill, who downplayed the significance of the victory over his squad's crosstown rival. "It will make all the difference in the world come playoff time."

The Skyhawks (6-3, 5-1 Southeast) set the pace early, shutting down the Green Valley offense and going ahead 8-0 on a 26-yard run up the middle by Henry Weeks on the final play of the first quarter.

But the Gators capitalized on a blocked punt late in second quarter, scoring on a 4-yard plunge by Brian Wiltshire with 2:10 left in the half.

McNeace answered on a 4-yard keeper moments later to make it 14-8 at halftime.

After Benjamin Jacobs' 23-yard TD reception gave Silverado a 22-8 lead midway through the fourth, the Gators went to their third quarterback of the night -- Mark McGovern -- for a desperation drive.

McGovern (5 of 11 passes for 59 yards) guided a 15-play, 65-yard drive that resulted in an 8-yard scoring pass to Xavier Kimbrough to make it 22-14 with 3:08 to go.

But the Gators (5-5, 3-3) never got the ball back, and their season ended with the loss.

Randy Liles helped the Skyhawks with 104 yards on five receptions, but Thornhill was especially pleased with his defense.

"They're getting better and better each week," said Thornhill, whose defense held the Gators to 57 yards in the first half. "They played really well tonight. They just gave up two big plays."

j Basic 46, Coronado 28 -- At Basic, senior quarterback Kenny Ward had six touchdowns to vault the Wolves vault into the playoffs as the Southeast Division's third seed.

In a shootout that had the atmosphere of a playoff game, Basic (5-5, 3-3 Southeast) and the Cougars (4-5, 3-3) traded blows for the first three quarters before the Wolves pulled away in the final period.

Despite the defeat, Coronado secured the fourth seed because of Green Valley's loss to Silverado.

The game was tied at 28 entering the fourth quarter, but the Wolves pulled away by outscoring the Cougars 18-0.

Ward completed 14 of 25 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 145 yards and two more scores.

Running back Chris Hosley added 83 yards rushing and a touchdown, and wide receivers Randy Trujillo and Daniel Rucker caught two touchdowns each.

Rojas -- who missed two field goals, had another one blocked and also misfired on an extra point -- hit the game winner just over the outstretched arms of two Centennial defenders.

The Bulldogs had one last chance and moved from their own 20 to the Shadow Ridge 40. But Centennial quarterback Jared Noa threw three incomplete passes and took a sack.

The Mustangs, who earned the Northwest's No. 4 playoff seed, scored first on Troy Cummings' 60-yard punt return touchdown early in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs took their only lead of the night at the 3:44 mark of the third quarter as Jaren Walker scored from 2 yards out.
