Chelsea Clinton attends opening of Tao nightclub.

Chelsea Clinton's mystery man at the opening of Tao nightclub is no stranger to family politics.

Marc Mezvinsky's mother is former Pennsylvania Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, a Republican, and his father is former U.S. Rep. Ed Mezvinsky, D-Iowa, who pleaded guilty to fraud charges in 2002.

Longtime friends, Clinton and young Mezvinsky have been spending a lot of time together since her recent breakup with Ian Klass, her beau of three years and an Oxford Rhodes Scholar.

They were spotted hamming it up for paparazzi and dancing at Saturday's grand opening of Tao, The Venetian megaclub that has New York roots.

She works for New York-based McKinsey & Co., a consulting firm, and he reportedly works for Goldman Sachs.

Chelsea's dad, President Clinton, has an Oct. 29 speaking engagement before the Nevada Development Authority.

TARADISE LOST

Hollywood hellion Tara Reid was ready for her closeup.

Host Jeff Beacher was acknowledging celebrities in the crowd during Friday's season-opening "Beacher's Madhouse" at the Hard Rock Hotel, when he announced, "We have two very special ladies in the audience with us tonight." As Reid stood up, Beacher announced, "Paris and Nicky Hilton!"

On her way out of the show, a wobbly and overwrought Reid was overheard saying, "I should have been onstage. I'm bigger than Paris Hilton."

Her E! "Taradise" Wild-On series, a boozy tour of international party scenes, staggered in the ratings and was not renewed.

BERNS FOLLOWS CASTALDI

Veteran newsman Dave Berns has been named as Gwen Castaldi's successor as host of KNPR's State of Nevada news show.

Castaldi, the show's creator, is retiring after 31 years in this media market.

Berns, who officially takes the job in mid-October, spent more than 10 years at the Review-Journal before moving to its sister publication the Las Vegas Business Press as editor and publisher.

Filling Berns' 9-10 a.m. Friday host position will be Erin Neff, political affairs reporter for the Review-Journal.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

Last week was Talk Like a Pirate Week, and I missed the boat, so to speak. But R-J reader Jim Brush of Sun City Summerlin went arggghhh when he spotted this spelling boo-boo on a Recreation and Park Society plaque at the Vegas Senior Citizens Center (Las Vegas Boulevard and Bonanza Road): "Department of Seizure Services."...

I'm not sure who that handsome lad was whose mug shot graced this space on Tuesday, but many of you pointed out it most definitely was not NASCAR driver Todd Bodine, who won Saturday's Las Vegas 350 Craftsman Truck Series. That's the real Mr. Bodine, above center, who danced up a storm on the bar Friday at Hogs & Heifers, the rowdy Third Street saloon, and brought his crew in to celebrate on Saturday...

Donna Dean, spokeswoman for the Public Education Foundation's ninth annual Education Hero Award Dinner, wants to clear up some confusion about Tony Bennett's two-song performance at the Four Seasons on Saturday. We mentioned here Tuesday that Bennett winged it after a sound system malfunction. There was no malfunction, says Dean. He chose to sing without amplification, and that static occurred when he placed the microphone on the piano and the mic rolled off and hit the floor.

THE PUNCH LINE

"O.J. Simpson has been convicted of stealing cable. He's really been living every man's dream when you think about it: free cable and no wife." -- David Letterman
