IN BRIEF

LAS VEGAS BOULEVARD

City Council to address building height limits

The Las Vegas City Council is scheduled to decide on a proposed height restriction for buildings along a stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard at its June 21 meeting.

The city's Recommending Committee, made up of Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian and Councilman Steve Ross, forwarded the proposal without a recommendation on Tuesday.

About 50 people showed up to the Recommending Committee meeting. Those in attendance included residents of the John S. Park neighborhood, who support the restriction; property owners along the land that would be restricted; and carpenters union members, who came out to oppose the proposal.

Under the plan, the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard between Oakey and Charleston boulevards would have restrictions of 60 feet high, or five stories.

Bob Bellis, president of the John S. Park homeowners association, wanted the item to be heard sooner, worried that developers would rush to submit plans.

But Tarkanian and Ross said they couldn't hear the issue before June 21, pointing to conflicting schedules and heavy council agendas in earlier meetings.

THROWN FROM VEHICLE

Pahrump woman dies in Route 372 accident

Barbara Cleveland, 49, of Pahrump was killed Saturday morning in a single-vehicle accident on state Route 372 west of state Route 160 in Pahrump.

Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Kevin Honea said Cleveland was driving east at 9:20 a.m. in a 2004 Audi when she allowed the car to travel onto the sidewalk. The front of the car struck a power pole and rolled over, Honea said.

Cleveland was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

20 YEARS IN PRISON

Man sentenced in toddler's death

Steven Lenover, 25, of Golden Valley, Ariz., was sentenced Tuesday to a 20-year prison term on a second-degree murder charge in the death of his former girlfriend's 20-month-old daughter.

His friends, family and defense attorney Carlene Lacy urged leniency, insisting Lenover loved Alana Paige Young and never intended her any harm. Lacy said the fatal injuries were the result of stress and poor judgment.

Prosecutor Greg McPhillips said there was no excuse for the blunt force head trauma injuries that killed the girl in May. He urged an appropriate sentence to punish Lenover and send a message that such actions will not be tolerated.

SHOOTING SENTENCE

21-year-old faces 64 to 150 years in prison

A man charged with capital murder in the 2004 shootings of two people in Las Vegas received a hefty prison sentence Tuesday in an unrelated shooting spree that wounded two other victims.

District Judge Jackie Glass imposed a sentence of 64 to 150 years on Randy Lopez, 21, of Las Vegas, in the 2004 shootings.

Glass said Lopez deserved to be shown the same amount of compassion he showed his victims in the shooting spree, which paralyzed one and badly injured another.

Lopez is charged with murder in the 2004 fatal shooting of 40-year-old Derek Wingard. Lopez is scheduled to go to trial in that case later this year, and prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY

UNLV vice president leaving for new job

A UNLV vice president has accepted a job as Southern Illinois University's provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Paul Ferguson was vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. President Carol Harter hired him to be dean of the graduate college in 1999 from the University of Louisiana.

During Ferguson's tenure, graduate programs have increased from 75, including 18 doctoral programs, to 106, with 32 doctoral programs.

Ferguson will begin his new job on July 1 at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.

He'll remain at UNLV through June. UNLV officials said an interim vice president will be named in a few weeks.

BLM LAND

County plans mobile homes on 30 acres

County commissioners authorized staff to begin developing a mobile home park on federal land Tuesday.

The provision would allow staff to reserve 30 acres of Bureau of Land Management property near Vegas Valley Drive and Hollywood Boulevard for a park with around 240 spaces.

The commission is expected to discuss mobile home park conversions and closures today during the afternoon part of its zoning meeting.
