CARSON CITY -- Despite a new annual report showing 25,000 incidents of domestic violence in Nevada, only 10 of 28 members showed up Friday for the spring meeting of the state Council for the Prevention of Domestic Violence.
Under rules of the council, a minimum of 11 members are needed for a quorum so the meeting could not be held.

"I am not going to criticize them, they are very busy people," state Domestic Violence Ombudsman Kareen Prentice said about the no-shows, which included the group's chairman, Attorney General George Chanos. He was out of town and could not attend, a spokeswoman said.
Prentice said 14 members had told a staff secretary that they would attend. She said she did not consider the absences a sign that members no longer consider domestic violence an important issue.
In response to questions, Prentice said the members were appointed by the attorney general because they expressed an interest in combating domestic violence.
She said she was confident a quorum would be present at the council's next meeting, which is July 21 in Winnemucca.
