EDITORIAL: Spend and spend and spend and ...
Midterm congressional campaigns are heating up, and a key sparring point from coast to coast is the growth of the federal government. Since Republicans took control of Congress in 1994 under the "Contract with America" and its pledges of fiscal restraint, federal spending has nearly doubled. This year, the federal government will spend about $300 million more than it collects in tax revenues, and the national debt will soar toward $9 trillion.
