It's vacation time, so it's appropriate that today's recent release lineup is all over the map on ...
The big screen scene: Taking today's getaway theme literally, "RV" (Sony) details the cross-country chaos that ensues when an overworked dad (Robin Williams) drags his wife (Cheryl Hines) and kids aboard an RV, bound for comic disaster.

Also going the goofy comedy route: "Scary Movie 4" (Weinstein), continuing the horror spoof franchise as hapless pals (Anna Faris, Regina Hall) join a clueless neighbor (Craig Bierko) to battle a "War of the Worlds"-style alien invasion.
"Hoot" (New Line), meanwhile, combines family-friendly comedy with a save-the-planet message, as the new kid in a Florida town (Logan Lerman) teams up with a tomboy classmate (Brie Larson) and her nature-boy stepbrother (Cody Linley) to save burrowing owls from the bulldozer.
Venturing off the cinematic Interstate and onto the byways, culture-clash comedy sparks "A Wake in Providence" (Indican), about an Italian guy (Vincent Pagano) who's afraid he'll ruin his relationship with his black girlfriend (Victoria Rowell) by introducing her to his crazy family -- at his grandfather's wake.
And Belgian brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne ("La Promesse") deliver the Cannes award-winner "L'Enfant" (Sony) about a young punk who's so desperate for cash he sells his newborn son on the black market, sending his girlfriend into shock.
Critic's choice: Legendary leading men lead the way, with "James Stewart: The Signature Collection" (Warner) showcasing DVD debuts of one of Stewart's best Westerns (1954's gritty "The Naked Spur"), two biopics (he plays Charles Lindbergh in 1957's "The Spirit of St. Louis" and one-legged baseball pitcher Monty Stratton in 1949's "The Stratton Story"), plus 1959's "The FBI Story" and two late-career Westerns with best friend Henry Fonda, 1968's "Firecreek" and 1970's comedic "The Cheyenne Social Club."
Fox, meanwhile, spotlights Clark Gable with the adventures "Call of the Wild" (1935) and "Soldier of Fortune" (1955), plus the 1955 Western "The Tall Men."
And before he got into politics, Ronald Reagan made some memorable movies, as Warner's "Ronald Reagan: The Signature Collection" makes clear with DVD debuts of "Knute Rockne All American" (1940), starring Pat O'Brien as the legendary Notre Dame football coach and Reagan as the doomed "Gipper," plus his finest dramatic hours (1942's "Kings Row" and 1949's "The Hasty Heart"), a biopic (as baseball pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander in 1952's "The Winning Team") and as a crusading district attorney in 1951's "Storm Warning."
Shifting from stars to star directors, "Six Moral Tales by Eric Rohmer" (Criterion) celebrates the French New Wave auteur's intriguing 1963-1972 cycle exploring temptation and its impact in "Suzanne's Career," "The Baker of Monceau," "The Collector," "My Night at Maud's," "Claire's Knee" and "Chloe in the Afternoon."
Hot docs: Speaking of the French New Wave, a pioneering Parisian film preservationist receives a cinematic salute in "Henri Langlois: Phantom of the Cinematheque" (Kino), which features the title character with legendary filmmakers from Alfred Hitchcock to Fran?ois Truffaut.
Kidvid corner: Cartoon characters new and old hit DVD, from the Cartoon Network's "Princess Natasha: Season One" (Anchor Bay) to baby boomer faves "Magilla Gorilla: The Complete Series" and "Hong Kong Phooey: The Complete Series" (both from Warner).
Also returning to DVD: "Dora the Explorer: We're a Team!" (Paramount), "The Wiggles: Wiggle Dancing" (Fox) and two "Thomas the Tank Engine" titles, "On Site With Thomas" and "Thomas, Percy and the Dragon" (Anchor Bay)
TV transfers: History inspires "Rome: The Complete First Season" (HBO), a 12-hour chronicle tracing the fall of the republic -- and the rise of the empire -- in 52 B.C. And, speaking of Rome, Antonio Banderas stars as the future Il Duce in "Benito: The Rise and Fall of Mussolini" (Lionsgate).
BBC's Dickens adaptations, meanwhile, continue with the DVD debuts of "Dombey and Son" and "The Pickwick Papers."
And series arrivals range from the wild and wacky "The Weird Al Show: The Complete Series" (Shout! Factory), with Las Vegas' own Amazing Johnathan among the comedy guests, to PBS' "Mystery!" import "Jericho: Set 1" (WGBH Boston).
Also hitting DVD: "The Duchess of Duke Street, Series 2" (Acorn), "The Flying Nun: The Complete Second Season" (Sony), "Full House: The Complete Fourth Season" (Warner), "Hogan's Heroes: The Complete Fourth Season" (Paramount), "The Jeffersons: The Complete Fifth Season" (Sony), "Remington Steele: Seasons 4 and 5" (Fox), "The Simpsons: The Complete Eighth Season" (Fox), "Surface: The Complete Series" (Universal) and "3rd Rock From the Sun: Season 5" (Anchor Bay).
