LIFE IMITATES REALITY TV

Vegas is grand prize for winners of two shows

Winner Benji Schwimmer performs a solo on "So You Think You Can Dance" on Wednesday.

It's not often you see "reality" and "Las Vegas" in the same sentence, but the city built on fantasy is the prize for the winners of two reality TV shows.

Heather West and Benji Schwimmer hit the jackpot on Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" and "So You Think You Can Dance," respectively.

West, who may not have out-cooked but definitely outlasted her competition, accepted a job at Red Rock Resort after the finale of "Hell's Kitchen" on Monday. A position with the hotel-casino was offered as first prize. The 26-year-old will be senior chef at Terra Rossa, the resort's Italian restaurant.

Schwimmer, who danced circles around some highly skilled competitors during the past few months, was named America's Favorite Dancer on Wednesday, receiving a grand prize of $100,000, a dance tour and a one-year contract with Celine Dion's show, "A New Day," at Caesars Palace.

With all the national exposure, Schwimmer, 22, is not so sure Las Vegas is the best bet for him. He plans to decide about Dion's show by the end of the year, after the top 10 contestants from the reality show finish their national tour.

"The issue is, I'm not a contemporary dancer. That's a very contemporary show," said Schwimmer, who is a swing dance champion and the son of the "King of Swing," Buddy Schwimmer.

But Dion wants him in the show, he said, so he is discussing some choreography changes with her representatives. Under consideration are ideas to incorporate a bit of his style into the show and to have him dance a duet with her.

"I would be honored," he said.

Dion's representatives couldn't be reached for comment for this report.

Schwimmer, a California native, plans to fly to Las Vegas to see Dion's show this week.

Life has been hectic for him since he won the competition. Immediately after Wednesday's show, he flew from Los Angeles to New York and has been going nonstop with television appearances and interviews.

He has received calls from three Broadway shows and several calls from Hollywood, and was offered the role of Fred Astaire in a show about the dancer's life.

"This was just a dream come true, literally," he said.

West has no qualms about a new life in Las Vegas. She said she is moving here next week and looks forward to being a resident. "It's huge for my career. It's going to jump-start it. I think I'm going to learn a lot," West said.

Red Rock President Scott Kreeger said in June that the "Hell's Kitchen" winner would be placed in T-Bones Chophouse in a position based on the chef's skill level. However, management decided her abilities would best be utilized at Terra Rossa, said resort spokesman Jeff Lovari.

The contract details had not been finalized Thursday, said resort general manager Ronan O'Gorman, but hotel officials are looking forward to West working at Red Rock.

"I think it's very, very positive for the resort. It's been an extremely popular show, we've had a lot of exposure, and we've had a lot of response from the public," O'Gorman said. "The phones were ringing right after the show with people asking where they could eat Heather's food."

West, who was born and raised in New York and grew up cooking, almost moved to Las Vegas after finishing culinary school in 2003.

"It's unbelievable. It's the city that never sleeps like New York," she said. "Only it really never sleeps."
