Gang member imprisoned in slayings

Getaway driver sentenced in double homicide

Kevin Fleming's expression of remorse for crimes he committed as a member of the Rolling 60s Crips earned him no leniency from U.S. District Court Judge Larry Hicks on Monday.

Fleming, who pleaded guilty to a felony charge of interference with commerce by robbery, was sentenced to a maximum 14 years in federal prison. Defense attorney Kevin Stolworthy unsuccessfully argued for a lesser sentence, emphasizing Fleming's decision to enter a guilty plea and also his poor health. At 500 pounds, Fleming, 34, suffers from numerous obesity-related ailments.

Hicks, however, reminded Fleming that two people were killed in the 2001 drug house robbery he took part in with four other gang members.

"Under the circumstances of this case Mr. Fleming, you did very well," Hicks said, reminding Fleming that he could have gotten a life sentence had he been convicted of all the charges in the indictment. "I think you know that."

Fleming was also ordered to pay $2,284.39 in restitution and to serve five years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.

"I am truly, truly sorry," Fleming said to Hicks.

The sentencing stems from a sweeping law enforcement operation that targeted the Rolling 60s in 2003. At the time, the gang was known to police for dealing in drugs, murder and robbery in a territory that included neighborhoods in central Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. The original indictment included 21 people, ages 19 to 34.

Fleming's crime unfolded on Sept. 26, 2001, when he, Darreal Biddle, Myron Manghum, Demarco Parker and Jamaal Johnson agreed to rob a drug house on Jackson Street, west of Interstate 15 and north of Washington Avenue. Fleming and Manghum waited in a car while the other three entered the house. During the robbery, shots were fired, killing Adrian Williams and Patrick Hawkins. Fleming was the driver of the getaway vehicle, according to his plea agreement, which also noted that Fleming has been uncooperative with prosecutors.

"The parties acknowledge that the defendant (Fleming) has not provided any assistance to or cooperation with the government in connection with this case," the plea said.

Two more sentencings related to the Rolling 60s indictment will take place later this year. Biddle and Floyd Strickland are scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 5.

Only one suspect in the case has not reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. Calvin Moten is scheduled to begin trial Oct. 17. Moten is charged with numerous felonies, including participation in a racketeer influenced corrupt organization, conspiracy to maintain drug houses and drug possession with intent to distribute.
