NORM: Jerry Lewis tapes TV spot on Strip

Bart Simpson's alter ego, Nancy Cartwright, was at Jet.

Michael Jordan took in sights at Pole-a-Palooza at Light.

Jerry Lewis was out and about early Tuesday filming a segment for the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon on the Strip.

Jerry Lewis was stopping traffic again, just like the old days.

On a blocked-off stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, a tuxedo-clad Lewis taped a TV segment as the conductor of the Las Vegas Philharmonic Orchestra early Tuesday.

The shoot will be part of his opening for his Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon on Sept. 3-4 at the South Coast.

An old pro in front of the cameras, Lewis, 80, completed the segment in one take, said MDA publicist Bob Mackle.

He conducted while the orchestra played Leonard Bernstein's "Candide."

Southbound Strip traffic between Spring Mountain Road and Flamingo was halted between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. for the taping, which took place in front of Caesars Palace.

Mackle said "the usual assortment" of wee-hour partyers wandered by, asking questions.

"A gentleman from Ireland asked who we were taping, and when he was told Jerry Lewis, he started shouting, 'Great Balls of Fire.' "

MALOOFS SHOOT AD

The Maloof brothers, George, Gavin, Joe and Phil, co-owners of the Sacramento Kings and the Palms hotel and casino, shot a commercial for both Carl's Jr. and Hardee's in the Mint high-limit salon on Tuesday.

The Maloofs were filmed eating the Carl's Jr. combo, featuring the $6 burger Paris Hilton made famous in a seductive commercial.

"They're the ultimate guys' guys," a spokeswoman for Carl's Jr. and Hardee's said.

Carl's Jr. is hoping the Palms adds the combo as a $6,000 room-service item.

SALTER'S STATUS

Weekend anchor Bob Salter "is still an employee right now" at KTNV-TV, Channel 13, according to a spokesman for the ABC affiliate.

That's the latest from Jim Thomas, vice president of marketing and programming for Milwaukee-based Journal Broadcast Group, which owns KTNV-TV.

Sources say Salter was fired Friday after an election night incident involving what Salter characterized as a "strong-arm" incident with a staffer at the campaign headquarters of Clark County sheriff candidate Jerry Airola.

Asked to comment on whether Airola's camp threatened to pull ads over the report, Thomas said, "I have no knowledge of that at all."

An Airola rep said an apology would be conveyed to KTNV over the incident.

Salter, reached by a Review-Journal reporter on Sunday, said he would have no comment.

THE SCENE AND HEARD

Former KLAS-TV, Channel 8, meteorologist Kevin Janison subs for Heidi Harris today on KXNT-AM, 840 with Alan Stock. Janison, who was let go by KLAS last week, will be on from 6-9 a.m.
