LETTERS: Pull up the drawbridge and stop growth

To the editor:

Recent news stories have stated that we must have more pipelines to bring gasoline from California to provide for future growth. We're told that we must steal groundwater from rural Nevada to provide for future growth. The Regional Transportation Commission says we must have yet another money pit -- oops, transit line -- up the center of Las Vegas Boulevard to facilitate future growth.

The politicians, bureaucrats and developers who make millions from these projects are not getting the message: Those of us who live here now don't want any more damn growth -- and we're the ones who pay the bills.

Wynn tip

To the editor:

Regarding your Wednesday article "Wynn alters rules on tips: Plan for sharing gratuities upsets casino's dealers":

Dealers at Wynn, I presume, have a toke committee. Don't the dealers have a right to vote on the issue of a percentage of their income going to another section of the work force?

Dear Steve Wynn: If this is OK with you, then it stands that maybe a certain percentage of your income and bonuses should go to the parking attendants, bellmen, dealers, cocktail waitresses, bartenders, casino porters, food servers, maids, porters, engineers, etc., and everyone else who makes your customers comfortable inside your hotel.

How would you like that? That's fair, isn't it?

Personal gift

To the editor:

The recent news about Steve Wynn ordering his dealers to share their tips with floor supervisors is distressing. When I give a dealer or any other casino employee a gratuity or tip, it is a personal gift of my money to an individual, not to the casino and not to Steve Wynn. The tip immediately becomes the personal property of the individual.

If Mr. Wynn requires any employee to share personal property with anyone else, he is actually committing theft even if he thinks he is stealing from the "rich" and giving to the "poor." If I worked for him and this situation occurred, I would have him arrested and charged with theft.

Reid's job

To the editor:

Danielle Skerritt-Seskin's letter in Tuesday's Review-Journal was a jaw dropper. So Sen. Harry Reid is "protecting the Constitution" by opposing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. If that is the case, then the Ku Klux Klan, which opposed adding the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments banning slavery and establishing civil and voting rights, were, as Ms Seskin stated, "protecting the Constitution."

She must also agree that the 19th Amendment granting the vote to women was equally damaging to the Constitution.

No, Ms. Skerritt-Seskin, Harry Reid is not doing his job. His job is to represent the people of Nevada. The people of this state have voted twice, each time by a 2-to-1 margin, to keep marriage between a man and a woman. Activist judges are making it necessary for the people to codify this traditional view into the Constitution.

President Bush is not throwing up a smoke screen, but actually doing something that his supporters want and desire. Whereas Sen. Reid is showing who he really represents -- not the people of Nevada, but the far left wing of the new Democratic Party.

This is not personal, as Ms. Skerritt-Seskin suggests, just the politics of representing your constituents.

Holiday gift

To the editor:

It saddens me, but doesn't surprise me, to see that the former county commissioners who were sentenced on bribery-related charges this week are allowed to be free until after the Christmas holidays. Guess the judge didn't want to spoil the holiday season. If it were your average working guy, he'd have been handcuffed and led away directly.

In any case, I think the remaining commissioners who were in office at the time of the crimes should be voted out as soon as possible or recalled. We need to remind the politicians for whom they work -- and I don't mean the developers. If you've ever been sickened by a zoning variance, vote the bums out.

Janison fan

To the editor:

I realize there are more important things in life, such as teacher salaries, unneeded wars, the high cost of everything, etc. But I will no longer be able to watch KLAS-TV, Channel 8 news. The dumping of Kevin Janison, the most knowledgeable weatherman in the valley, is a crime. Mr. Janison is witty, smart, and a supporter of our communities.

I only hope and expect many others will boycott Channel 8 news. I love the news team members, but this was uncalled for.
