The Cimarron-Memorial junior defensive back returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and the physical Spartans ground game racked up 367 yards in a 38-13 victory at Coronado on Friday night.
After outgaining the Cougars 181-29 in the first half and jumping to a 10-0 halftime advantage, Cimarron found itself in a battle again after allowing two long pass plays on the first drive of the second half, including the 33-yard touchdown against Butler.
Coronado's kickoff was squibbed down the middle of the field, but Butler fielded it cleanly.
"When I picked it up, the wall hadn't had a chance to form yet," Butler said. "So I just tried to get it in there behind them and get it up the field."
The return put the Spartans back ahead by 10 points and swung the momentum back their way.
"You could tell once we did that we took a deep breath and relaxed a bit. Otherwise, it may have been a whole different story," Cimarron coach Ron Smeltzer said.
The ground game took over from there.
Eric Brinkley ran for 96 yards and a score, and Eddie Wide added 86 yards and a touchdown.
But neither of the tailbacks was Cimarron's leading rusher for because quarterback Chazz Mitchell ran for 99 yards and a score on just four carries.
Mitchell split time with starting quarterback Nicholas Rhodes. Cimarron's quarterbacks failed to complete a pass on three attempts.
Brandon Marshall added 57 yards and a score, mostly late in the game when the Spartans were running out the clock.
Brady McManus completed 8 of 21 pass attempts for 159 yards and two scores for Coronado, including five completions to Taylor Knowles for 114 yards and a score.
