Suspect's house arrest ends

Defendant faces trial in January with bodybuilders charged in killing

A 24-year-old Las Vegas man accused of helping bodybuilders Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan dispose of a woman's body is no longer under house arrest.

Anthony Gross had been on house arrest since February, when he posted $13,000 bail and was released from jail to await trial on arson and accessory to murder charges.

Authorities allege Gross helped Titus and Ryan, Titus' wife, dispose of the body of their 28-year-old personal assistant, Melissa James, in December.

In court Tuesday, Gross' attorney, Louis Palazzo, successfully petitioned District Court Judge Jackie Glass to release Gross from house arrest. Prosecutors did not oppose the release.

Afterward, Palazzo said the house arrest conditions were burdensome for his client, and the removal of Gross from the county's house arrest program was warranted given Gross' minimal involvement.

Palazzo said Gross had been "duped" by Titus and Ryan.

Gross "was a pawn," Palazzo said. "Had he known what was going on, he wouldn't have gone anywhere near this thing."

Titus and Ryan are charged with killing James then burning her body in Ryan's sports car off state Route 160.

Ryan is a 33-year-old fitness champion and Ms. Olympia runner-up. Titus is a 40-year-old past place-winner of international Mr. Olympia competitions.

They have each pleaded not guilty and are in the Clark County Detention Center without bail.

According to grand jury testimony, James was shocked with a Taser, drugged with morphine and beaten before being slain and set on fire.

So much had been done to James that the Clark County coroner's office was unable to determine the exact cause of her death.

According to authorities, Gross secured a gas can, then drove into the desert with Titus and Ryan. There, Titus used the gas to set his wife's Jaguar on fire with James' body inside, and then Gross gave Titus and Ryan a ride back to Las Vegas, according to police.

Palazzo said Gross had no idea that Titus and Ryan were planning to burn a body.

"This guy didn't Taser anybody," Palazzo said. "He didn't bind anybody up. He didn't put anybody in a trunk. He didn't do anything. He shouldn't even be in the case."

Palazzo said prosecutors have made no plea agreement offers to Gross, and that he will soon be filing an order to have Gross tried separately from Titus and Ryan.

All three defendants are scheduled to go to trial in Glass' courtroom in January.
